(KNZA)--The Brown County Commission has approved regulations for open burning in unincorporated areas of the county and penalties for violations.
Under the resolution adopted unanimously by the Commission Monday, county residents planning an open burn are required to notify the Brown County Sheriff’s office two hours prior to starting the burn and obtain a permit from the sheriff’s office. The permit holder is also required to give notification when the burn has been extinguished.
In addition, open burns must be attended and supervised until extinguished. The exception is for large brush piles, which must be checked periodically until extinguished.
Violators would face a $200 to $500 fine, and may be ordered to pay restitution to responding fire departments.
The resolution, drafted following numerous out-of-control burns in March, will become effective after its publication in the official county newspaper.
