Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Jail Captain, Steve Buck completed a week long jail administrator course at the National Institute of Corrections in Aurora, Colorado from March 23-27.
The program deals with a wide variety of challenges that are inherent in jail administration and provides administrators with information and tools to manage their operations effectively. The program focuses primarily on ten key elements in jail administration: Managing risk, using jail standards to establish and assess operations, developing and accessing policy and procedure, determining staffing needs, managing the workforce, managing inmate behavior, managing the budget, developing a fire, safety, and sanitation plan, assessing operations and working with key stakeholders external to the jail.
Captain Buck said “This program was very valuable in giving me more tools to use for our facility here in Jackson County. It provided me with what is needed for the fundamental tasks we have to plan and arrange for as jail administrators on a daily basis. It was beneficial to me to be provided with the opportunity to share with my peers and to get their valuable insight in this field as well.”
Only top-level administrators are allowed to participate in this program. The program and travel costs are provided free to agencies and are paid for by the National Institute of Corrections.
