(KNZA)--Beginning Monday and running through March 6th, area law enforcement agencies will join the Kansas Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies across the state in participating in the annual seatbelt enforcement campaign around area high schools.
The campaign is hosted by the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Traffic Safety Section, and is in conjunction with Kansas’ Seatbelts Are for Everyone (SAFE) program.
In 2014, thirty-four teens lost their lives due to car crashes in Kansas, with 63 percent of those victims not being properly restrained.
In an effort to change that trend, law enforcement across Kansas will be extra vigilant when patrolling around schools.
Officers will issue citations to any individual who refuses to obey the traffic laws, whether it’s for speeding, texting or failing to buckle up.
Among area law enforcement taking part in the campaign are the Brown County Sheriff's Department, Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Hiawatha Police Department and Horton Police Department.
