(KMZA)--A Wamego man was killed Friday evening when the trench he was working in collapsed.
The Riley County Police Department says 30-year-old William Wiske, a city of Manhattan employee, was working to repair a water main in the southwest part of the city when the trench collapsed around him.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene shortly after 6:50 and efforts to free him began immediately.
Wiske was buried up to his waist in dirt and mud. Emergency personnel were able to free him in about 20 minutes.
Wiske was taken to Mercy Regional Health Center, where he was pronounced dead.
