(KAIR)--A Kansas City man was arrested Thursday morning in Clay County, Missouri following an investigation by the Atchison Police Department into an alleged case of child abuse.

Police Chief Mike Wilson says the investigation started Sunday when they received a report that a two-year-old child had suffered severe injuries to the head and abdomen at an Atchison residence. The child had been taken from the residence to the Atchison Hospital before being transferred to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. The investigation continued throughout the week, ending when officers with the Liberty Police Department executed an Atchison County Arrest warrant, that charges 34-year-old Christopher McNeal with aggravated battery and abuse of a child.

McNeal was transported to the Clay County Jail, with bond set at $100,000.

The child's mother, who is an acquaintance of McNeal, has not been charged in the case.

The victim remains hospitalized in serious condition.
