(KNZA)--The city of Hiawatha has been awarded a $500,000 federal grant to continue improvements to the city’s sanitary sewer system.
The Kansas Department of Commerce says Hiawatha is among 12 communities that will share a total of $5.6 million in federal grants through the Community Development Block Grant Program.
Hiawatha’s project will repair and replace sanitary sewer lines and manholes. USDA Rural Development will provide $2.3 million in matching funds.
The city received a similar Community Development Block grant for the first phase of the sanitary sewer system improvement project.
Hiawatha is under an executive order from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to reduce rain and ground water from entering the city’s sewer system.
