ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) - A state senator from northwest Missouri is seeking a ban on red-light cameras and high-speed license plate scanners that he says are meant to make money, not keep residents safe.
The St. Joseph News-Press reports Sen. Rob Schaaf, a St. Joseph Republican, says it is outrageous that the plate scanners keep personal data for indefinite amounts of time.
Missouri's red-light cameras have largely been unplugged pending a ruling from the state Supreme Court about whether they are legal. The court heard arguments last month in three challenges to the devices in the St. Louis area, but it hasn't ruled.
Republican state Rep. Delus Johnson of St. Joseph says the public should get a chance to vote on whether to allow the cameras to operate.
