(KNZA)--A Mayetta teen convicted of sexually abusing a three-year-old girl at his mother's daycare business last June has been sentenced to 16 months in a juvenile correctional facility followed by aftercare until he turns 23.
Following a two-hour sentencing hearing Wednesday, Jackson County Attorney Shawna Miller says District Judge Michael Ireland partially granted 17-year-old Weston Hasty's request for a downward departure.
Miller says Hasty's presumed sentence in juvenile court ranged from incarceration for two years up to the time he turned 22 1/2, with an aftercare term of 6 months or until he turned 23.
Hasty pleaded no contest last November to two counts of aggravated indecent liberities with a child.
Miller previously filed a motion to have Hasty tried as an adult, which the judge denied. However, the court did grant extended juvenile jurisdiction in the case. Miller says that means that if Hasty fails his juvenile sentence, he could face the adult sentence on the charges, which is nine years and ten months in prison, followed by four years post-release supervision.
