Sales Tax Increase Possible In Nemaha Co, KS
01/21/2015

(KMZA)--Nemaha County voters could be asked to decide the fate of a health care sales tax increase in April.

The possibility of a half-cent sales tax hike follows Tuesday's Nemaha County Commission meeting, where representatives of both the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital and the Sabetha Hospital met with the Commissioners.

The focus was a request to see the sales tax initiative come before voters in April, in order to offset lost revenues from Medicare and Medicaid payments, due to provisions of the Affordable Care Act set to take effect in the future.

The sales tax would remain in place for ten years.

The Commission will take the matter to County Attorney Brad Lippert for the drafting of  a resolution needed to place the question on the ballot.

The final say on whether to move forward with the proposal will happen at a future Commission meeting.
