Atchison City Commission Formalizes KDOT Agreement
01/21/2015

(KAIR)--The Atchison City Commission has formalized an agreement with the Kansas Department of Transportation to facilitate funding for a pedestrian trail in the city.

City Public Works and Utilities Director Justin Pregont says the contract with KDOT is simply an agreement for them to facilitate the nearly $1-million in federal grant money to the city, and no money will be coming from the state itself.

The trail will run from U.S. 59 Highway to the Atchison Hospital, running along U.S. 73 Highway. Construction is scheduled to start in 2016.

Commissioners voted 4-0 to during their meeting Tuesday, to authorize Mayor Dave Butler to sign the agreement. Commissioner Jack Bower was not present.

In other business, the Commissioners voted 4-0 to place two stop signs at the intersection of Tenth Street and Forrest Avenue, converting it into a two way stop. Pregont says that low visibility combined with a significant slope at the intersection necessitated the change.
