Structures Destroyed In Lancaster Area Fire
01/16/2015

(KAIR)--Fire crews from throughout Atchison County, along with nearby communities, battled a quickly spreading Lancaster-area grass-fire that destroyed several structures in its path.

Atchison County Sheriff's investigator Larry Myer says the fire was reported around 1:30 Friday afternoon, and destroyed two large sheds and three smaller ones. A home in the path of the fire also incurred damage, but was saved by the efforts of the firefighters.

The fire was brought under control nearly four hours after it began.

No injuries are reported.

The initial investigation indicates that a spark from a welder being used to repair Union Pacific railroad tracks was the likely cause of the fire.

Gusty southerly winds helped to spread the flames.

Fire crews from Lancaster, Effingham, Shannon, Mount Pleasant, Horton, Everest, Southern Platte County, Missouri and Rushville, Missouri, all worked to battle the blaze, assisted at the scene by the Atchison County Sheriff's Department.  photo 1-16--FIRECOMBINED-1.jpg
