(KAIR)--Atchison County officials are making preparations to repair or upgrade several bridges in the county.
Bob Chambers, with the engineering firm Cook, Flatt, and Strobel came before the County Commission during their meeting Tuesday afternoon, to present plans for the restructuring of a bridge at the intersection of 266th Road and Sherman Road:
Commission Chair Jeff Schuele says an older bridge will be replaced at that intersection next year. It is at a unique angle, and the project seeks to change or alter the entrance from 266th Road onto Sherman Road.
Schuele adds that the firm is one of several the Commission is considering, and a decision should be made in the near future on which one to hire for the project.
Schuele says that two other projects deal with bridges in the western and central part of the county, and will utilize funds from a Kansas Department of Transportation program. He says “This is part of the new local bridge program with the state of Kansas...there is a max amount that the state of Kansas will allow each county to submit projects for. In this case, we are going to be able to replace two different bridges. Number one, due to cost, and number two, if we were able to take a fracture critical bridge off system or close it, then we are able to get two bridge projects funded instead of just one”.
Schuele says these two projects are projected to be complete by the end of this year.
