Hiawatha Commission Receives Update on Trail Project

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening received an update on the Fitness and School Trail project.

Project Engineer Brian Kingsley told Commissioners about half of the concrete trail has been laid so far.

He said the contractor is currently demobilized because of the weather, and doesn't know when work will begin again. The project is scheduled for 80 working days, and Kingsley says the contractor currently has twenty-four working days left. He said he does have some concerns about the project being completed on schedule.

Kingsley says one issue has come up during construction of the trail. He said soft unstable soil conditions were encountered east of the Hiawatha High School. Kingsley is recommending that a geotechnical engineer be hired to investigate the subsurface conditions and make a recommendation. The commission is expected to consider a proposal from a Wichita firm at their next meeting to perform the services.

In other business, the Commission gave Police Chief John Defore approval to offer Beau Hasenhor an open police officer position at $16 an hour, contingent on pre-employment testing. Defore says interviews were conducted last week.

Hasenhor most recently served as Horton Police Chief from January 2012 to August 30th, 2013. He also previously served as an officer with the Hiawatha Police Department and deputy with the Brown County Sheriff's Department.
