(KNZA)--The Jackson County Commission has adopted a charter resolution to raise the county's bed tax from three to five percent.
The Commission approved the resolution last week at the request of the Jackson County Tourism Council.
The bed tax, which has been in place since April 1st, 1997, is collected from all hotels, motels and tourist courts in the county with more than two bedrooms.
The Holton Recorder reports that since its implementation, the tax has generated between $17,000 and $45,000 annually in Jackson County. The proceeds are used to support county tourism and economic development efforts. The tax is administered and collected by the Kansas Department of Revenue.
Collection of the new bed tax is to begin April 1st, 2015.
The charter resolution is subject to a protest petition. If a valid petition is filed, a public vote would be required.
