BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) - Deputies in a southeastern Nebraska county will soon have to drive their own cars to work after the Gage County sheriff decided they can't take patrol vehicles home after their shifts.
Sheriff Millard "Gus" Gustafson tells the Beatrice Daily Sun that the department has six police cruisers.
He says he can no longer justify letting deputies take the vehicles home when there have been minimal after-hours emergency calls.
As a result of the change, Gustafson says around 40,000 miles are expected to stay off the odometers each year, increasing how long the vehicles can still be in use.
The change will become effective next week.
