Seneca Fire Dept. Planning for 125th Anniversary Celebration
( KMZA)--The Seneca Fire Department is making plans for the department's 125th anniversary celebration in June of next year.
Fire Chief Allen Henry appeared at last week's City Council meeting to discuss ideas for the celebration, which will be held the weekend of June 26th-28th.
Questions concerning city insurance coverage for activities being held in the North City Park were discussed. The department also inquired whether the city would care to give a monetary donation for the event.
The Council decided to have the Fire Department committee meet with the Council's finance committee to discuss what the council would do and present it at the next council meeting.
In other business, restoration of the brick exterior of the city hall building was discussed. The Council last month opened bids for the project, with the Council appearing to favor the highest of two bids received in the amount of just over $107,000 from Topeka-based Restoration and Waterproofing.
Two options were discussed. One option was to apply for a 2016 Heritage Trust grant to help fund the project. The other option was to not seek a grant, sign the contract submitted to the city, and perform the work in 2015.
The council instructed City Superintendent Brian Rusche to contact the bidder to see how long the bid is good and report back to the council at the next meeting.
And Nick Scott with United 4 Youth met with the Council to discuss the program and request a financial donation for the local SADD chapter. The council decided to wait on making a decision until all council members were present. Council members Galen Niehues and Bruce Hermesch were absent.
