(KAIR)--The Atchison Sheriff's Department arrest two, and continue the search for a third suspect, all believed to be connected to numerous burglaries in three local counties.
Atchison County Undersheriff Joe Butner says the search started just before 8:00 Tuesday night following the report of suspicious activity involving a vehicle near 318th Road and Labette Road. Upon arrival, a deputy quickly spotted the suspect vehicle and when he turned to check on it, the vehicle sped up, ran a stop sign, and made its way into a cut corn field. When a second deputy arrived to assist, they followed it for approximately one half mile off of Morton Road into a second cornfield, where they discovered that the occupants had fled the scene on foot.
Following the all night investigation, which included the use of the Kansas Highway Patrol's search helicopter, two suspects, 38-year-old Brenda Wilson and 23-year-old Steven Thornington, both of Leavenworth, were located shortly before 8:00 Wednesday morning, but the search for the third suspect continued until just after noon.
Butner says items found in the vehicle are believed to have been stolen from Atchison, Leavenworth, and Doniphan counties. Wilson and Thornington were transported to the Atchison County Jail, where they face charges including burglary and theft.
The third suspect, publicly identified only as a man, remains on the run, but is not believed to be armed.
