Grant Sought for Accessibility Improvements At Atchison YMCA

(KAIR)--The Atchison City Commission held a special meeting Friday afternoon to conduct a public hearing on a proposed community development block grant application for accessibility improvements at the Atchison YMCA.

Mark Hulet, who is the Senior Vice President of Capital Assets and Risks for the YMCA of greater Kansas City, presented Commissioners with a plan that would add several accessibility improvements to the structure, including changes to the outside of the building. He said they will be taking a look at the existing sidewalks and the existing parking spaces to see what can be done to give people a chance to park closer to the building.

Hulet adds there will be changes inside as well, including the addition of a therapy pool that will provide warm water therapy programs for local health care programs.

Family style locker rooms are also planned, which Hulet says will allow mothers and sons, fathers and daughters, or health care providers with their clients to have private changing rooms.

The total cost of these improvements is expected to be approximately $150,000, with the grant allowing for $400,000. Hulet says they will look into other possible additions to take full advantage of the grant.

Commissioners voted 3-0 to support the grant application. Commissioners Allen Reavis and Jack Bower were not present.
