(KNZA)--A Mayetta woman, who formerly served as City Clerk of Auburn, Kansas, is going to prison for embezzlement.
According to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom, 61-year-old Alice Riley was sentenced Friday to one year and a day in federal prison and ordered to pay restitution of nearly $190,000.
Riley plead guilty to one count of interstate transportation of stolen funds, admitting that her crime began in 2009 as she served as City Clerk for the Shawnee County town of just 1,200 people.
Riley issued duplicate payroll, and other unauthorized checks, to herself which she deposited into her personal accounts.
She then covered up the embezzlement by creating false entries in the city's books and bank statements.
