(KLZA)-- The Auburn City Council further discussed an ordinance Monday night that would amend the City of Auburn zoning district maps, designating certain areas as the Auburn Downtown and Courthouse Square Historic District. The area was previously registered as a Federal Historic District. The next step is to start using a Historic Board to review building permits for changes to the outside of buildings in the area.
The City is hoping to preserve the exterior of buildings with historic significance. The Historic Board will work with property owners to see if they can come up with a plant and hopefully grant money to make improvements to maintain the historic aspect of the properties as opposed to covering them up with siding.
Mayor Scott Kudrna said the intent is not to keep property owners from making the improvements they want to their buildings. He said if the Committee and the building owner can’t come together on a plan, the owner can do what they wish. The Historic Board will not be demanding and is not there to stop property owners from doing what they want.
No action was taken on the ordinance Monday night. It will be discussed again at the November Auburn Council meeting.
