(KAIR)--Atchison residents will soon have the opportunity to take part in a new city wide single stream, curbside recycling service, set to start early next year.
City Public Works and Utilities Director Justin Pregont says the new recycling method is projected to save the city money in the long term. He says that currently, they dispose of trash at the Atchison County transfer station at $35 a ton in tipping fees, with recyclables at approximately $20 a ton.
Pregont adds that the recycling pickup service is part of a new overhaul of the city's waste collection services, which will effectively streamline the entire process. With the offering of recycling, they are also moving to a system of automated truck collection, which will utilize less city staff, and will allow waste to be collected in a much less period of time.
The city will be including complete details explaining the new process, along with a small sign up form, with upcoming utility bills. Those interested in taking part in the new program should return the completed form to city hall no later than October 1st.
