Atchison Reworking Downtown Accessibility Improvement Project
09/03/2014

(KAIR)--Business owners in downtown Atchison have decided not take part in a cost share program that would improve curb and sidewalk accessibility in various locations around the city.

According to City Public Works and Utilities Director Justin Pregont, officials originally planned to fund these improvements using a similar program that is used to improve city sidewalks throughout the year. However, the program never really gained any traction among business owners.

Pregont came before City Commissioners during a recent meeting and informed them that despite the setback, the ADA advisory committee still wants to move forward with the improvements and requested that the city take on the full cost.

Pregont says that $50,000 was allocated in the current budget for these projects, with another $50,000 available in the following year's budget.

Commissioners voted to approve the funding.
