Tomato Fest 2014 will be held on Thursday, August 28 from 6:30 to 8 pm at the Buchanan County Extension Office located at 4125 Mitchell Avenue in Saint Joseph, on West Campus of Missouri Western.
The event, sponsored by the University of Missouri Extension and the local chapter of Missouri Master Gardeners, will feature up to 43 varieties of tomatoes, all grown in the garden plot at the Extension Office. Additionally, 30 varieties of peppers, eight types of eggplant, and several varieties of sweet corn will be on display.
Presentations are scheduled on producing, preparing, and preserving tomatoes. Master Gardener Larry Werthmuller and Horticulture Specialist Tom Fowler will speak in the garden plot about growing tomatoes and insects and diseases that tomato growers may encounter. An Extension agronomy specialist and an additional horticulture specialist will also be on site, and Master Gardeners Charlotte Chunn and Judy Wright will be available to answer questions on preparing and preserving tomatoes, peppers, and other foods. Participants will be welcome to tour the gardens, talk with horticulture specialists and Master Gardeners, and pick up some educational literature.
The Master Gardeners will also tomato cookbooks available for purchase.
The event is open to the public, and there is no charge to attend.
Call the extension office with questions, 816-279-1691.
