Bids Accepted for New Corning Fire Station

( KMZA)--Construction of a new fire station in the Nemaha County community of Corning moves a step closer.
On the recommendation of project architect Tom Arpin with BG Consultants, the Nemaha County Commission on Monday accepted the low bids for the materials to be used in the construction of the building in the total amount of $198,449.
Bids were opened last week. No bids were received for plumbing and termite control.
Nemaha County Rural Fire District #2 was awarded a nearly $300,000 KanStep grant in April from the Kansas Department of Commerce for the purchase of the materials. Volunteers will provide the “ sweat equity” for the construction of the new fire station. The total estimated project cost is nearly $600,000.
In other business, Lyle Peterson with the Kansas Department of Commerce presented Commissioners a list of ten individuals who have been approved to receive Rural Opportunity Zone funds from Nemaha County and the state of Kansas to help with student loan payments.
Following discussion, the commission voted to approve an additional $131 to the program funds for 2014. That will allow eleven individuals to receive funding totaling $15,131.
