Preparations For Atchison Art Project Continue

(KAIR)--Despite some minor setbacks, preparations for a beautification project for the Atchison Farmer's Market are moving forward at a steady pace.

Volunteers with the Atchison Art Association are busy cutting thousands of colorful mosaic tiles that will eventually be placed on eighteen concrete slabs spanning two city blocks.

Executive Director Deborah Geiger says that it takes time to create a thing of beauty, and this project in particular, has taken it's own path. She is not worried about the delays, as the end result will be well worth the wait. She says “this thing is transforming into something we are going to be proud of, and excited about for many years. The quality of this piece has improved with every week that we have waited”.

Geiger wanted to make sure to thank everyone who has helped with the project, including New York artist and mosaic expert Susan Jablon, who is also very inspired to place public art into communities. Jablon had done something similar in her own community four years ago, and Geiger says the transformation, was awe inspiring to say the least.

Geiger says the plan now is to start placing the tiles on the wall by August 9th, with work planned to take place every Saturday and some Wednesdays for approximately eight weeks. Everyone is encouraged to come out and lend a hand. No experience is needed as there will be volunteers on hand to demonstrate how to place each tile.
