(KAIR)--Atchison County officials are planning to replace the boat used for water rescues after the current boat suffered a serious engine malfunction while attempting a water rescue on the Missouri River over the weekend.
According to Commission Chair Jeff Schuele, the boat did have some mechanical problems in recent, which lead Emergency Management Director Wes Lanter to consider plans for its replacement. Lanter was able to plan ahead, and budget the $12,000 needed to replace the boat with a larger, used 2001 boat with 250 horsepower.
Schuele says attempts were made to make the older watercraft last a bid longer, with the engine being completely re hauled just two years ago.
Commissioners voted 3-0 to approve the purchase of the new boat.
In other business, the Commission finalized an agreement with the Patsy Porter CPA office to complete their 2015 budget. Schuele says the Commission is gathering some final input for the budget, which he expects to be completed by August 12th.
