(KMZA)--Nemaha County Senior Services plans to seek a grant to build what’s being dubbed a Northeast Kansas Transit Center in Seneca.
Director Diane Younghans informed the Nemaha County Commission on Monday that she plans to seek a $627,000 “ Ladders of Opportunity” grant through the Kansas Department of Transportation.
Younghans said the grant would be used to construct a building on county-owned property south of the current Nemaha County Community Building that would house the Seneca senior nutrition center, the Senior Services administration office, the public transit program and possibly Nemaha County Community Health Services.
The public transit program would not only provide transportation services for senior citizens, but also students to Highland Community College’s new technical center in Baileyville.
If awarded, the grant would fund 80 percent of the project cost and requires a 20 percent local match. The county land for the building would be part of the match.
Younghans said the grant application is due August 15th and she should hear back if the grant is approved or not in two months.
Commissioners gave Younghans approval to seek the grant.
