KHP Starts School Bus Inspection

(KAIR)--As the start of the school year for Kansas schools approaches, The Kansas State Highway Patrol will be working to ensure that students are kept safe on their travels to and from school.

Troopers will be checking all school buses in the state starting in mid July and working until school starts in mid August to make sure that each one can load, transport, and unload students as safely as possible. Officials will check to see if each vehicle has working lights, tires, emergency exits, and windshield wipers. They will also ensure that emergency spill kits and first aid kits are fully stocked.

Vehicles that do not comply with safety regulations cannot be used to transport students until all defects are corrected and a trooper rechecks the vehicle.

In 2013, the KHP inspected 11,215 school buses and other school vehicles for defects. Over the last ten years, the Patrol has inspected 95,237 school vehicles that transport students.
