(KTNC)--The Pawnee City Council will consider contracting with the Southeast Nebraska Development District to enforce nuisance ordinances.
SENDD Executive Director Dave Taladay gave a 30-minute presentation to the council Monday night, explaining nuisance clean-up procedures and the services SENDD could offer.
SENDD started offering code enforcement to communities three years ago. Taladay says the goal is to clean up dilapidated buildings, junk vehicles, tires, and litter, something he says helps build community pride.
The cost to have SENDD enforce nuisance codes would be between $5,000 and $15,000 a year. The Pawnee City Council will consider contracting with SENDD when they form next year’s budget.
Communities that employ SENDD for nuisance abatement include Humboldt, Palmyra, Crete, and Dorchester.
The Pawnee City Council received an update on the property at 923 8th Street, which is considered a nuisance. They were told the property owner began making required improvements to the property earlier this month.
The city has also sent follow-up letters to owners of two other nuisance properties.
