(KAIR)--An Atchison County Jail inmate who walked away from a work assignment over the weekend has surrendered to authorities.
According to Sheriff Jack Laurie, 24-year-old Joseph Clem contacted the central dispatch office at approximately 7:30 Wednesday evening and stated that he was at his parent's home, and ready to turn himself in.
Deputies responded, and took Clem into custody.
Clem was part of a four man work crew from the jail who were assisting with setup and cleanup of the annual Juneteenth celebration at LFM park Saturday. Three of the inmates returned to the jail later that night, but it appears that Clem had wandered off shortly before the event ended.
Clem had been serving a small sentence for various misdemeanor charges, but he is now facing additional charges of escape from custody and theft. Laurie says the theft charge is because Clem was wearing prison issued clothing when he fled.
