(KAIR)--The Atchison Juneteenth Committee will be hosting their ninth annual celebration this weekend with events designed to celebrate African-American history and culture.
The event celebrates the date when the last slaves in the U.S were freed in 1865, and Committee Treasurer Don Bratton says the meaning behind the celebration has spread throughout the world. The event celebrates the African-American freedom, and emphasizes education and achievement. He adds that it is a week of celebration, though in some places it is celebrated for a month. In many cities across the country, people from all races, nationalities, and religions join hands to acknowledge a period in history that continues to influence society today.
While there will be other Juneteenth celebrations around the world, Bratton says the one in Atchison will be different in that everything from food to events will be offered free of charge to everyone. That way, everyone no matter what their economic status is, can enjoy the festivities.
The Atchison Juneteenth celebration will start Saturday morning with a parade that will leave the Ebenzer Baptist Church at 11:30 and proceed to LFM park.
The celebration will continue at the park with events including a presentation by The Kansas City Gateway High Steppers, and appearances by the Tuskegee Airmen and the Buffalo Soliders.
A variety of food, including grilled and fried chicken, and BBQ ribs will be served starting at 2:00
Bratton encourages everyone to come out and enjoy this family friendly event.
