(KNZA)--A Minnesota-based company will oversee the Hiawatha School District’s food service program, beginning next school year.
The Hiawatha Board of Education Monday evening approved a one-year contract with Taher Professional Food Service.
Judy Cameron with Taher told the board their intent is to increase participation, which in turn will save the district money. Cameron couldn’t guarantee a definite cost savings with her company. The cost to the district for the one-year contact will be $1.54 for each breakfast and $2.04 for each lunch served. Last year’s cost based on the same numbers was just over $336,000.
Taher will hire the district’s current food service director, Sharon Gormley. She will be offered a similar salary and benefits package.
Cameron said Taher will offer students more choices for their meals, while still meeting federal guidelines on calories and sodium.
Taher currently has contracts with three school districts in Kansas---Parsons, Belle Plaine and Prairie View.
