(KLZA)-- Richardson County Sheriff Randy Houser says a 70 square mile search of the northwestern section of Richardson County turned up nothing following the wounding of Deputy Sheriff Josh Nincehelser early Monday morning.
The Sheriff said it was important to make sure the shooter was not wounded when Deputy Nincehelser returned fire and was still somewhere in the county injured or wounded. Houser says they do not believe the suspect is still in the area, and don’t believe there is any danger to area residents or homes.
Sheriff Houser said he and other members of the Sheriff’s office have talked with Nincehelser and he is expecting him to possibly be released from the hospital Tuesday. It is likely Deputy Nincehelser will be off duty for a period of four to five weeks.
A Nebraska State Patrol helicopter and NSP personnel aided the Richardson County Sheriffs Office with the Monday search.
About 2 a-m Monday morning Deputy Nincehelser stopped to see if a motorist on 717 Road about a quarter mile west of Highway 75 needed assistance. When the Deputy approached the vehicle an occupant opened fire with a .40 caliber handgun hitting Deputy Nincehelser in the upper left arm and hitting his patrol unit at least twice.
The Deputy was able to return fire as the silver or tan Dodge Neon fled.
