ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP)-- A lack of lifeguards could mean that two St. Joseph swimming pools that are temporarily closed could be shuttered permanently.
City spokeswoman Mary Robertson says officials are trying to hire more lifeguards for the season and have approved an increase in hourly wages from $7.50 an hour to $9.
YMCA lifeguard instructor April Hook says several factors may be preventing people from training to become a lifeguard, including the $230 cost to attend a 25-hour course spanning one or two weeks.
The St. Joseph News-Press reports a pretest also is keeping some from lifeguard training. Before taking the lifeguard course, applicants must complete a number of tasks to prove they are physically able to handle the job.
Hook says being a lifeguard involves more than sitting in a chair.
