(KAIR)--A company hoping to establish a construction and demolition recycling center on the site of the old Bromley Quarry has suffered a setback in the effort.
According to Atchison County Commissioner Mike Bodenhausen, County Counselor Pat Henderson came before the Commission during a recent meeting to inform them that Bettis Asphalt had contacted him recently regarding the project. He says the Kansas Department of Health and Environment had declined to issue the company the permits needed to open the facility.
KDHE gave no reasons for the denial.
Bodenhausen says that Bettis contacted the Commission nearly two years ago to ask if they could purchase the property for the purpose of setting up the collection point. Commissioners gave their approval and the property was purchased soon after.
Bodenhausen says the Commission was looking forward to this project going forward, as it would have diverted a significant amount of construction debris away from county landfills.
Bettis will continue to apply for the permits despite the setback.
