(KNZA)--Memorial Day services are planned around the area Monday.
In Hiawatha, a service of remembrance for Brown County veterans will held at 10 in the morning at the Brown County Historical Society Museum in downtown Hiawatha.
The annual service is planned and presented by the Brown County Veteran’s Honor Guard.
The 2014 Emcee will be retired Colonel William W. Vonderschmidt. The speaker for this year’s service is Lt. Colonel Erich Campbell. The service will include a special remembrance for James C. Strube of Powhattan who lost his life while fighting in Vietnam June 11, 1969.
In Sabetha, the Sabetha Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 7285 and American Legion Post 126 will host the annual Memorial Day Service at the Sabetha Cemetery, beginning at 10. (In case of inclement weather, the service will be held at the Sabetha Event Center (former armory).
The service at the Woodlawn Cemetery will begin at 11:15. (In case of inclement weather, the Woodlawn service will be held at the Woodlawn Community Building).
The speaker for both services will be Retired Air Force Colonel Charles DeBellevue, a highly-decorated combat veteran who is the leading ace of the Vietnam Conflict. The public is invited.
In Highland, the Memorial Day service will begin at 9:30 at the Doniphan West High School. First Lt. Nick Carlson with the U.S. Army Kansas National Guard will speak. After the program at the high school, the group will move to the Highland Cemetery for the ceremonial portion of the service. Highland Pride is sponsoring the event.
