(KMZA)--Plans for the construction of a new fire station in the Nemaha County community of Corning are moving forward.
The Nemaha County Commission on Monday approved an agreement with the Kansas Department of Commerce for the acceptance of an about $300,000 KAN-STEP grant for the project on behalf of Nemaha County Fire District #2.
The total estimated project cost is nearly $597,000. The grant funds will go to purchase the materials, with volunteers providing the “ sweat equity” for the construction of the new fire station.
The commission also voted to enter into a contract with BG Consultants, of Manhattan, for the architectural plans for the project at a cost of $47,160.
In addition, the Commission voted to enter into a contract with the Kansas Rural Water Association for the inspection of the work done in connection with the construction of the new fire station.
In other business, representatives of the Baileyville Community Park Committee met with the commission to request $20,000 from the Broxterman Estate Fund for the establishment of a handicapped accessible playground in the community.
The total cost of the project is estimated between $40,000 and $80,000.
The Commission approved the appropriation of $20,000 from the Broxterman Estate Fund for the project.
