(KTNC) --The Democratic Party Candidate for Governor of Nebraska brought his campaign to southeast Nebraska Tuesday.
Chuck Hassebrook is the former Executive Director of the Center for Rural Affairs, based in Lyons, Nebraska.
Hassebrook touts his plan to revitalize small town economies in Nebraska. That plan, he says, focuses on developing small businesses and renewable energy, and job training. He says small businesses are treated as an afterthought in economic development and says he’d like to lift a cap on tax credits available to small businesses in the state. Hassebrook says Nebraska used to spend about a million dollars a year to support small business planning and training, but that amount was cut in half a few years ago and Hassebrook says he'd like to increase that amount.
Hassebrook says he would also like to get rid of regulations that he says hurt small business development.
Hassebrook says he would work to beef up job training as a way to help businesses fill job openings. He says the state should partner with schools and community colleges to provide technical job training to high school students.
Other priorities of his, Hassebrook says, are to strengthen early childhood education and property tax reform. He calls property taxes the “most burdensome tax in Nebraska.” He says he would create a property tax credit focused on moderate-income homeowners and family farmers and ranchers.
Hassebrook also says the state should tax out-of-state Internet sales. That, he says, would benefit local retailers and generate $40 million that could be used for property tax relief.
Hassebrook campaigned in Falls City and Tecumseh on Tuesday. He faces Republican Pete Ricketts in the race to succeed Dave Heinemann as Nebraska Governor.
