Former Teacher Arraigned on Five Felony Counts

(KLZA) -- A former southeast Nebraska teacher was arraigned in Nemaha County, Nebraska District Court Wednesday on five felony counts of sexual assault in the first degree.

24-year-old Carrie Miller, of Tecumseh, entered a plea of not guilty to all of the charges. A jury trial has been scheduled for August 13th and bond was continued.

Miller, who taught Spanish at Johnson County Central School in Tecumseh, faces a preliminary hearing May 7 in Johnson County Court on a felony charge of first-degree sexual assault. The judge will determine if there is enough evidence to move the case to district court in Johnson County.

Miller was arrested in January following an investigation involving the Nebraska State Patrol and Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. Miller is alleged to have had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old male student.

Court documents allege Miller and the student had sexual contact 50 to 60 times from October 2012 through October 2013. It is alleged the encounters were arranged using a cell phone and the two shared explicit photos of each other.

Authorities alleged most of the encounters occurred in Nemaha, County, Nebraska at an abandoned farmstead. At least one of the encounters is alleged to have occurred in Johnson County.

Each of the felony counts is punishable by a maximum of up to 50 years in prison with a minimum sentence of one year in prison.
