Morel Mushroom Season Underway in Nebraska
(KTNC)--Morel mushroom season is underway in Nebraska, and will be peaking in the next week or two.
Nebraska Game & Park Commission spokesman Greg Wagner says they are starting to emerge in the woods along river bottoms and by Mother's Day they will be found on the hilly forested areas.
The mushrooms feed off dead and decaying matter, so Wagner suggests looking in river bottom woodlands near dead cottonwood or box elder trees.
If you plan to go hunting for mushrooms, Wagner says make sure you first get the landowner's permission, otherwise you are trespassing and you will be ticketed.
After picking mushrooms, make sure to wash them and soak them in salt water. One of the easiest ways to prepare them is to saute them in butter.
