25 Injured in Southeast Ks Tornado
(AP)-- A tornado that tore through the southeastern Kansas town of Baxter Springs left 25 people injured and more than 100 homes and businesses damaged.
Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves said Monday that nine of the 25 injured in Sunday's storm were hospitalized with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. He says a person who died Sunday night suffered from a medical condition and the death was not attributed to the storm.
An assessment found the storm damaged 100 homes, ranging from minor to total destruction. Twelve businesses also were damaged.
Groves said workers are restoring power to about 40 percent of the community and to 91 residents whose gas was disconnected after the twister, which was 2 miles long and 2 blocks wide.
Governor Sam Brownback, along with United States Representative Lynn Jenkins and United States Senator Jerry Moran visited the area early Monday to view emergency response operations and meet with local residents.
Brownback gave approval for a State of Disaster Emergency Proclamation just after 6:30 Sunday evening.
