(KLZA) -- Retired Colonel Tom Brewer ended 36 years in the Army and National Guard on January 1 this year and the next day threw his hat in the ring to run for Nebraska’s Third District Congressional seat challenging incumbent Adrian Smith in the primary.
A short time later, Brewer learned he had Leukemia. During a visit to Falls City this week Brewer talked about his health. After undergoing chemotherapy for a treatable form of Leukemia, Brewer says his blood tests look good and he is feeling good.
Brewer is spending time traveling Nebraska’s largest congressional district introducing himself to voters. He says voters are concerned about the Ag Bill that passed with a large part of the budget related to food stamps and not agriculture items. Other important issues are shrinking government’s interference in everyday things and treatment for veterans and cuts to vet benefits.
Brewer is a political newcomer and vowed not to accept any funding from political action committees for his campaign. He feels the Republican Party is satisfied with incumbent Adrian Smith in office. Brewer calls Smith a career politician who is more interested in surviving the next election and not ruffling feathers so he can get re-elected.
Brewer calls Smith a professional politician, and described himself as a lifetime soldier with more to give. He feels his military career has given him a good knowledge of what is needed to serve the people of Nebraska’s Third District, noting he has worked with large budgets, training thousands and touts his working with the Department of Defense, Department of Justice and Department of State.
The primary election is coming up in Nebraska May 13th.
