(KAIR)--The city of Atchison has reworked their monthly sewer usage fee.
City Finance Director Becky Anderson came before the City Commission Monday afternoon to propose a new way to calculate the average monthly sewer charge for city residents. Anderson says the old system required water meters to be read monthly for the first three months of the year to obtain an average sewer usage fee. She says the reason it is done during that time of the year is because those are typically the lowest consumption months, so the sewer charge is based on the months people are using the least amount of water.
Anderson says the recent snowy weather made it difficult for some meters to be read and they had to be estimated, under the old code, the readings for April, May and June would have been used, and this could have lead to higher charges, since people typically use more water in those months. The new ordinance changes the wording so that meters could be read in winter months, and not just in the first three months of the year.
Once calculated, the average sewer charge is billed each month to city residents, and will remain unchanged until the following year.
The Commission voted 5-0 to approve the new method.
