(KAIR)--Inspections on nearly one hundred bridges in Atchison County are taking place, even though they were not required this year. According to County Commission Chair Jeff Schuele, the county has authorized the engineering firm Schwab-Eaton to conduct the inspections at a cost not to exceed $24,000.
The firm was awarded a contract to inspect the county's non fracture critical bridges at a cost of $78 per bridge last month, and has agreed to include the additional bridges in their inspection plans for the additional cost. Schuele says the only time the company would contact them regarding these inspections is if one of those under twenty foot structures needs additional inspections.
Schuele says that even with the added expense of having the additional bridges inspected, the county will still spend less than what they did last year on the bridge inspections.
