(KAIR)--A group out of California has purchased the land where the former Atchison Youth Residential Center once sat, and is planning on placing an international boarding school on the nearly 160 acre property.
Skip Bradley, who has been working on facilitating the purchase, says the process started last December, when Los Angeles investors Carol Kwan and Alvin Wong visited Bradley. They were interested in some other properties in the area, and when Bradley mentioned the Youth Residential Center property, they decided to take a look at it right away.
Bradley says the group asked him to work with local officials, including Maur Hill-Mount Academy, Atchison High, and Benedictine College, since they were very interested in cooperating with all three schools, something they believe would make everyone stronger. He adds the new school will not turn down local applicants, but their focus will be primarily international students. The group has strong ties in Asia, and they really feel they can bring in a lot of Asian students, along with students from other countries as well. He says they are aiming to have about fifty percent domestic students and fifty percent international students enrolled at the school.
The new school will conduct classes at the 9th-12th grade levels, and will focus primarily on science, technology, engineering, and math. There has also been some discussion on including some kind of pre med program as well.
