(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission has accepted a bid for the city’s comprehensive insurance, which includes property and liability coverage.
The commission Monday evening accepted the lone bid submitted by SBS Insurance, representing EMC Insurance Companies, with a total base bid of $89,074. City Administrator Mike Nichols says the total premium is more than $600 less than what the city paid last year.
In other business, the commission gave Police Chief John Defore permission to seek more than 24-hundred dollars in funding through the Atchison Elks Lodge for the purchase of five sets of Stop Sticks for utilization in police pursuits and a training kit. A set would be placed in each of the department’s five patrol cars.
Defore says the equipment provides a safer way to deal with fleeing suspects as well as dramatically reduce the risk to officers and the public. Defore says the Stop Sticks come with a five-year warranty, so if a set is damaged they will be replaced at no cost to the department. Defore is a certified instructor in their use and will provide the training for the department’s officers at no extra expense.
The commission also gave Defore approval to purchase four hand-held 800-band radio’s from Haug Communications in Seneca for a total cost of $6,660.
