(KAIR)--Blair Milling in Atchison is facing a significant clean up after a water main feeding into their sprinkler control room broke just before 4:30 Tuesday afternoon, causing water to flow from the building at a very high rate. Atchison Fire Chief Mike McDermed says that when fire crews arrived, it took them some time to get the water shut off, since they did not know where the shutoffs in the building were located. The Atchison City Water Department was contacted, who was then able to isolate a couple of valves to shut down the flow of water enough to where it was not causing a problem.
McDermed adds that due to the cold weather conditions and the large amount of water flowing onto the Tenth Street rail crossing, the railroad was notified to make sure the tracks were not damaged.
Blair Milling Vice President Wes Blair says the company has already started on the cleanup process, and are moving forward the best they can. He says production will continue, since there is another plant in Seneca that can pick up the slack and make any needed product.
Blair says he expects the cleanup to progress quickly, and expects to be back in full operation as soon as possible.
The intersection of Tenth and Main Street is now open to traffic, after being cleared of water and ice.
