(KAIR)--Ernest Hansen, who served as Atchison County Sheriff from 1975 to 1981, passed away Sunday at the age of 85. Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson says that he knew Hansen throughout his tenure as Sheriff, having first gotten to know him a few years before he joined the Police Department when he was participating in a ride along program in college.
Wilson says he remembers Hansen in many different ways. He was familiar with his family, remembers him as a business owner from the time he owned a cleaners on North Fifth Street before he became Sheriff, and most importantly, as someone he really looked up to.
Wilson says things were a bit different at the Atchison County Jail when Hansen was Sheriff. He was Sheriff when the old jail was still in operation, and at that time, the Sheriff actually lived in the jail in his own private quarters. His wife would actually cook meals for the prisoners. Sheriff Hansen was the last Sheriff to live at the jail.
Funeral services for Ernest Hansen will be held Friday morning at 10:30 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife Lurela, a sister, and five sons.
