(KLZA) -- The Mound City School Board this week voted to join with the South Holt and Nodaway-Holt School District Boards to retain St. Joseph Attorney Gary Myers to represent the Boards in negotiating on behalf of the school districts for future abatement issues between the taxing school districts, the Holt County Commission and element Power.
Recently when other such facilities have been built, the taxes paid the school districts by companies have varied greatly from company to company and school district to school district.
Eaton noted that while the first phase of the planned wind farm calls for Element Power to build 100 electricity producing wind towers in Southern Holt County. The second phase of the wind farm project would include property in the Mound City School District. Myers has experience in working with other entities in creating such agreements.
In other Board action Wednesday evening the Mound City School Board heard a request from Donnie Ireland for the district to approve a sports co-operative with the South Holt School District that would allow his daughter Sydney, a freshman at Mound City to play softball with South Holt beginning this spring. Superintendent Eaton said primarily due to Title IX requirements, the Board took no action on the request.
A public hearing was held concerning the start date for the 2014-15 school year at Mound City. No one from the public spoke during the hearing. The Board later approved the 2014 – 15 school calendar. The first day of school for students will be August 18th and school will dismiss for the year on May 20th, 2015.
Following an executive session the Board voted to extend the contract of Superintendent Ken Eaton an additional year making it a three year contract. The February Board meeting will begin at 12:30 p-m on February 19th. Staff reports were presented by 4th grade teacher Krista Burge and Special Education Teacher Lexi Heck. Sara Murphy and Roanne Bonke presented information to the Board on the Art Club activities.
