(KAIR)--Officers with the Atchison Police Department said goodbye to their beloved K-9 dog Bear earlier this month, but it may not be long before Bear's successor joins the department. Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson says they are already looking at several vendors they are familiar with. He says there are a number of issues they study when they look at what provider or trainer they will eventually obtain the animal from.
The department is looking for an animal that is trained in the same three skills Bear was so adept at, which includes not only drug detection, but patrol apprehension and tracking as well
Wilson went before the Atchison City Commission Tuesday evening to present information they had obtained during this search, and asked permission to expend assest seizure funds, which is money seized by law enforcement and forfitted by the court to be used for anti drug efforts.
The City Commission voted 4-0 to authorize the purchase of a Police K-9 for an amount not to exceed $12,000.
